Living Seams
Zaubernacht
by Kurt Weill
Our production of Zaubernacht is the culmination of all the encounters that fall under the banner of Living Seams -a project that intends to record, collate and conserve the oral history of refugees in Kent between 2000-2021 - and weave these collected lived experiences into the fabric of the production by translating them into movements. The result is a moving performance that aims to raise awareness to one of the most pressing social issues that was as relevant in Weill’s time as it is today.

Suspended between dream and reality, a group of children, or teenagers?, or adults?, find solace in their imagination to escape the harsh realities of their circumstances. Amidst the challenges they face, they embark on a magical journey, using their creativity and fantasy as a source of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
The performance features 5 dancers, one singer and a small ensemble of 9 musicians. Composed following the horrors of the Great War and the Spanish Flu Pandemic, we have placed the piece in a context where wars continue and the world struggles to recover from another pandemic. But out of this modern-day trauma, despite the pain and hardship, new things can yet again be created.
